Accuracy is fundamental to ReachMyBharat. Despite our best efforts, errors can occur in journalism. When they do, we correct them openly and promptly. This page explains how we handle corrections, updates, and retractions.
1. Our Commitment
We commit to:
- Acknowledging errors when they’re identified
- Correcting errors as quickly as practical
- Being transparent about what was changed and why
- Not silently editing published content to hide errors
- Treating reader-reported corrections seriously and respectfully
2. What Counts as a Correction
We distinguish between different types of post-publication changes:
2.1 Correction
A factual error in the published article — wrong name, wrong date, wrong number, wrong attribution, factually inaccurate statement. Corrections are flagged at the bottom of the article with a note such as:
Correction (DD MMM YYYY): An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated [X]. The correct information is [Y]. We regret the error.
2.2 Update
New developments, additional information, or context added after publication. The original information was accurate at the time of publication, but the situation has evolved. Updates are noted with:
Updated (DD MMM YYYY): [Description of what was added or revised based on new information.]
2.3 Clarification
The original was not factually wrong, but could be misinterpreted or lacked important context. Clarifications are noted with:
Clarification (DD MMM YYYY): [Explanation of the clarification.]
2.4 Retraction
In rare cases where an article is fundamentally wrong, fabricated, or misleading in a way that cannot be salvaged through correction, we retract it. The original article will be replaced with a clear retraction notice explaining what happened.
3. How to Request a Correction
If you believe we have published something inaccurate or misleading, please contact us with the following information:
- Article URL — The link to the article in question.
- Specific text or claim — Quote the exact statement you believe is incorrect.
- What you believe to be accurate — Explain what the correct information should be.
- Source for your correction — Provide a link or reference (preferably a primary source like a government portal or official document) supporting your claim.
- Your name and contact (optional but helpful for follow-up).
Send corrections to: reachmybharat@gmail.com
For urgent corrections (e.g., misinformation that could cause harm), please mark the subject line “URGENT CORRECTION”.
4. Our Process
When we receive a correction request, here is what happens:
- Acknowledgment — We aim to acknowledge correction requests within 1 business day.
- Investigation — Our editorial team reviews the original article, sources, and the correction request. We may consult primary sources to verify.
- Decision — Within typically 3-5 business days (faster for urgent issues), we determine whether a correction is warranted. We may decide:
- Issue a correction, update, or clarification (most common when an error is confirmed)
- No change needed (with explanation to the requester)
- Retract the article (in serious cases)
- Action — We update the article with a clearly visible correction note dated and explaining the change.
- Response to requester — We email the person who flagged the issue to inform them of our decision.
5. Where Corrections Appear
All corrections, updates, and clarifications are placed:
- Within the affected article, typically at the bottom in a clearly marked notice
- Dated with the date of correction
For corrections involving a particularly significant factual error, we may also note the correction at the top of the article. Major retractions are noted on our home page or social media when warranted.
6. What We Don’t Do
- We do not silently delete or edit articles to hide errors.
- We do not remove articles simply because the subject of the article is unhappy with accurate reporting.
- We do not charge fees for corrections (and we are concerned if anyone has demanded such fees from you in our name).
- We do not remove archived articles except in extraordinary circumstances (e.g., legal orders, severe privacy concerns, or threat to safety).
7. Article Removal Requests
We generally do not remove published articles. Our policy is to correct rather than delete, because deletion damages the historical record of our reporting. However, we may consider removal in cases of:
- Court orders or legitimate legal requirements
- Articles that fundamentally violated our editorial standards (in which case we issue a retraction)
- Legitimate, demonstrable safety concerns about identifiable individuals
- Privacy violations that cannot be addressed through correction
Such requests should be sent to reachmybharat@gmail.com with full justification.
8. Right of Reply
If you are the subject of an article and believe it has misrepresented you, you may submit a response. We will consider publishing reasonable, factual responses (often as an update to the original article). Send right-of-reply submissions to reachmybharat@gmail.com
9. Appeals
If you have requested a correction and believe our response was inadequate, you can escalate the matter by emailing reachmybharat@gmail.com with the subject “Correction Appeal: [original request reference]”. A senior editor will review the case.
10. Tracking Our Accuracy
We periodically review correction patterns to identify areas where our editorial process can be improved — for example, if a particular type of error recurs, we adjust our verification practices. This is part of our continuous commitment to accuracy.
